There's a myth in mediumship development that has caused more unnecessary shame than almost anything else: that “pure” mediumship should contain no psychic elements — and that if your own intuition is involved, the reading somehow doesn't count.

After thirty years of professional work, Mia Ottosson calls that myth what it is — damaging:

“The psychic energy is so ugly? No, it's not. It's a compliment to the mediumship. Without the psychic energy — if we don't learn the intuitiveness of it — you're only going to be half the medium you can be.”

What's the actual difference?

Mediumistic energy is communication from those in spirit: evidence about the spirit person — who they were, how they passed, specific shared memories — offered to prove the continuity of life and validate the connection. Psychic energy is your intuitive connection with the living person in front of you: insight into their life, their current challenges, their path forward. One proves; the other guides. A healing reading needs both.

Where does the information in a reading really come from?

This is where Mia's honesty tends to surprise people:

“In all honesty, very little comes from the spirit. It's only when it's pure evidence it comes from the spirit. When it comes to the assessments, when it comes to guiding, it's usually us.”

Many sitters arrive expecting something quite different — and Mia is direct about whose job it is to fix that:

“We have to educate the sitters… they think that the grandmother is gonna come in and tell them what they is gonna do in their life. And they don't do that.”

When a spirit seems to speak about the client's current life or future, it's usually flowing through your intuitive understanding rather than arriving as dictation. That isn't a failure of mediumship. It's how the partnership works.

What is the 50–50 partnership?

“You need to work together. So don't underestimate your part of it. It's a 50–50 partnership here.”

The spirit provides the evidence of who they are. You provide the intuitive understanding that turns that evidence into meaning and relevance for the person sitting with you. Both halves are essential — and neither one diminishes the authenticity of the communication.

How do I balance both in a reading?

  • Begin with clear mediumistic evidence — the relationship, specific memories, the passing if appropriate.
  • Once the connection is established, allow your intuition to explore why this particular spirit is connecting.
  • Notice when you're receiving direct evidence versus when you're intuitively interpreting.
  • Be transparent with your client about the source: “Your grandmother is showing me…” versus “I sense that you are…”.
  • Notice how that transparency creates a more authentic, more powerful reading.

Some clients need strong evidence that their loved one continues. Others need guidance for the life they're living now. As Mia puts it, “for me, it's very important to meet the client's need — what do they want?” The skilled medium can offer both, without pretending it all comes from spirit.

Embracing both halves isn't a compromise of your mediumship. It's the whole of it.
